What is Electronic
Benefits Transfer (EBT)?

Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) is a secure, efficient system that delivers government benefits, like SNAP (food stamps) and eWIC, to eligible individuals and families. Instead of paper vouchers or checks, benefits are loaded onto an EBT card, similar to a debit card, which can be used at authorized retailers. EBT cards make accessing benefits easier and more convenient while also helping to reduce fraud and streamline transactions.

What is the difference
between SNAP and EBT?

The federal government created SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) to provide food assistance benefits to eligible low-income individuals and families. EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) is simply the electronic system that delivers SNAP benefits onto a card, much like a debit card. In short, SNAP is the benefit program, and EBT is the tool used to access it.

What is an EBT Card?

An EBT card (Electronic Benefits Transfer card) is a plastic card, similar to a debit card, used to access government benefits like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) or eWIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children). It securely stores benefits electronically, allowing recipients to make eligible purchases at authorized retailers by swiping the card at checkout. The system automatically reloads benefits onto the card each month for continued use.

What Can Customers
Buy with EBT?

EBT Food

EBT Food benefits allow shoppers to purchase various staple grocery items, including fresh, frozen, and canned fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, bread, cereal, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages.

EBT Food benefits, often associated with programs like SNAP, help households access nutritious food options for home preparation and consumption. Restrictions apply to hot or prepared foods, non-food items, alcohol, tobacco, vitamins, and medicines.

EBT Cash

EBT Cash is a feature on some EBT cards that allows recipients of certain government benefits to access cash assistance.

EBT cash can be used for more purchases than food benefits, such as clothing, household goods, and bills.

It can be accessed at ATMs or as cashback at participating retailers without requiring a special license. Eligibility and usage restrictions for EBT Cash vary by state.
